Guiding you through a long weekend in wonderful Wellington.
Upon touching down in this lovely part of the North Island I quickly fell in love with the friendly, relaxed harbour side vibe. Which did not at all show its windy reputation with consistent blue skies and manageable mid twenties summer temps. It wasn't long before I began mentally mapping out my New Zealand dream visit list for extended future adventures. Until then here are a few wonderful ways to spend a weekend in Wellington.
SEE AND DO
Wellington Harbour and Oriental Bay
Stroll along the waterfront with a gelato in hand (naturally) whilst you people watch and take in the nautical harbour side charm. Not to mention harbour stair jumping...or watching as it was in my case. The dreamy boat houses along the bay were a definite highlight. If you continue walking you will end up hitting sand on the lovely Oriental Bay beach.
You can walk or drive up Mount Victoria to experience a dreamy 360 degree panoramic view of Wellington.
A relaxed yet dynamic street lined with cool cafes, restaurants and shops. Think cute stationary, prints, record stores and vintage. Make sure to take a moment to admire the colourful bucket fountain whilst the local musical talent does it's thing.
Wellington Cable Car
Take the car up and leisurely make your way back down to the harbour via the Botanical Gardens.
Think leisurely strolls, lush greenery and dreamy blooms.I can only imagine how amazing the tulips would look in the spring.
You'l find pretty yummy foods at the City Markets (8:30am - 12:30pm) and Harbourside Markets (7:30am - 1:00pm in winter, 2:00pm in summer,) on a Sunday. Peruse through an interesting array of art, crafts and homewares at the Underground Market (10:00am - 4:00pm) on Saturdays.
EAT AND DRINK
My favourite coffee blend in New Zealand, which is on par to Australia's Campo's and Market Lane blends.
A real restaurant favourite with tourists and local alike that epitomises the chilled out Cuba Street vibe. Great breakfast classic on offer with generous servings of avocado, no less.
Gorgeous space with really friendly staff. Enjoy a yummy breakfast whilst perusing the paper. The porridge came with salted caramel...need I say more.
Proper 'fush and chups' with potato scallops that took me back to my childhood.
Highly recommend the nachos and pork tacos. With a Pacfico of course.
Delightful American style breakfasts with maple syrup that is the real deal. Let's just say you won't leave hungry.
Yummy harbour side gelato. The berry flavour was divine.
Chill out with great craft beers and ciders on tap. Snag a front row seat first for plentiful people watching along the harbour.
